15 Things to look out for during Hot Weather – Daddy Edition

If you read the news, you will know that another heat wave is on the horizon. This time it will reach up to 31 degrees in places. The Irish certainly like to talk about their weather. And somehow you just easily integrate into it. Nice weather instantly changes your mood… for me anyway.

Sunshine, hot temperatures and all might sound bliss but when it comes to your children, it is very important to protect them in weather like this. Us mum’s always have the right gear for our little ones. What about daddy though? You see a lot of hilarious dress codes these days when daddy is in charge. The latest one I saw, was a baby dressed in just dungarees with no t-shirt underneath. Our daddy’s are trying their best for their children but they always seem to get the clothes wrong. Even in our household I had a few scenarios I had to shake my head. It’s cute if you think about it though.

In hot weather, like we are promised in the next coming week, it’s very important to dress your little ones appropriate. I am away for work the first half of next week. This is a guide for all daddy’s out there including hubby. To most people, these may be obvious but many many accidents have happened in the past.

1. Keep them hydrated as much as possible. Offer a drink of water every now and again.

2. If you have an infant/toddler, dress them in a t-shirt only, ditch the vest on hot days.

3. Anything above 18 degrees, shorts only please.

4. Dress them in sandals, their feet will thank you.

5. If you have a school child, let them wear their uniform shorts rather than the trousers.

6. Offer snacks. Maybe it’s just me but personally I don’t like eating a big meal when it’s too warm. Fruit is very refreshing ie. melon, strawberries etc.

7. Apply sun cream every 90 minutes if your child is exposed to sun. (apply 30 minutes before heading out)

8. Always wear a sun hat when outside.

9. Avoid time outside between 11am and 3pm when the sun is the strongest.

10. Stay in the shade if possible. If you are in the garden, get the parasol out and cover the area your child plays in.

11. Keep curtains closed during the day to avoid direct sun light into the room which will heat up the room.

12. Sleep with the window open. It gets cooler at night.

13. If your child gets sweaty very quickly, run a cool bath before bedtime.

14. At bed time, put on shorts and a vest only.

15. Never ever leave your child in the car! Even if it’s just one minute. The car heats up so quickly.
