An Open Letter to my Mum

Today marks the third anniversary since my mum passed away. I’ve decided that I’m going to write this letter in English as well as German. It’s only right to do so and I’d say my mum would appreciate it.

ENGLISH

Dear Mum,

It’s been three years since you left us. I can’t believe that it has been three long years already. It seems like it was only yesterday.

The day you sent me a text message telling me our neighbour is going to ring me because you are not able to in your condition anymore. She told me how miserable you are. Without any further thoughts I booked the next available flight to be with you the next few days. When I arrived, you were laying in bed. Though when you saw me, you jumped up to give me a kiss and a smile with the last bit of energy you had. “The mister” as you funnily called him and little man (he’s now a big boy) flew over to support me.

A Saturday morning you left us. I still remember your face as you were laying there. It’s a shame loved ones have to go from us like that. Ten days prior to that it was your 59th birthday. I had sent you a bunch of flowers and a card to make you happy.

Since your illness I read so much about cancer. It’s really sad how many people are getting diagnosed with it daily and many die. Just a few weeks ago I was speaking to a friend whose granny was diagnosed with the same type and was given only three weeks. You’re really asking yourself how researchers didn’t get behind this yet.

Life goes on, though I think about you everyday. I could do with some help or advice from you at least once a day. I could talk to you about everything. Even if it was hours of Viber messages or Facetime.

We had a lovely time in Ireland every time you visited. We have gone through many funny things and laughed a lot. You loved concerts and Boybands as much as I do. It was lots of fun and not embarrassing at all when you danced to the music, even when it came across like that sometimes. It’s going to be my eleventh year living in Ireland. I am trying to visit Waren as much as possible but it’s not as easy when there are no relations anymore as well as no accommodation. Maybe this year sometime.

I am particularly happy that you got to meet Matthew when he was a baby up until he was 16 months old. The video of you and him at Christmas is something very special. You are a granny of two now. Chloe is two years old already. You’d be really proud and happy as I remember you saying at the start you would love me to have a girl. Her middle name is after granny…Maria.

Matthew is attending school in September. How the time flies. You can probably remember the time I started school with my Schultüte. To keep the tradition going, I will also hand over a Schultüte to Matthew.

Through your education I could give some of that to my own kids. It’s true what they say about your own mum doing similar parenting things. I could do with some advice of you though. It’s not always easy with the kids and requires a lot of patience. Sometimes I am wondering could it be the reason I changed around the kids because you left us? Who knows.

Sometimes I still dream about you. Dreams that feel real but then you wake up and think “oh, it was only a dream”.

We have moved by the way. I remember well when you were giving out about the neighbours in the old house. We now live close to County Dublin. You’d love it here particularly because your room would be so much bigger.  We don’t miss Sligo at all for some reason. The kids and us have all settled in.

I hope you are with granny and granddad. Even after three years, I still receive messages from your colleagues you used to work with and they can’t believe you are gone.

This letter is written to remember you in your third year.  You are still missed by everyone.

Love you loads.

Your daughter. xxx

GERMAN

Liebe Mutz,

Had dich ganz doll lieb, du bist vermisst.

Deine Tochter.

You don’t think about it when you hear from other people but only when you are affected yourself. xx

What a lovely letter and lovely photo. Cancer has affected so many around us too, including my mother, and my daughter’s best friend (8) lost her father in January. It is so hard and nasty. Big Hugs
