Retro Drive In – Watching a Movie in the Car

I know we are all well over the Christmas period this week but I still think this deserved  its on post because it’s not just operating over Christmas

Just before Halloween hubby stumbled across an event on Facebook called Retro Drive-in. It’s basically a huge screen in Leopardstown sponsored by the radio station 98FM. The kids are a bit too young to watch Halloween movies. Matthew gets things in his head quite easily and is not able to sleep properly. So we decided to wait until Christmas.

They then released a list of movies to be seen. One was Santa Clause the movie. We decided to book it. It’s a day out with a difference for the kids. The drive to Leopardstown for us is about thirty minutes. It’s so handy to live so close to Dublin now, so many things to do.

We arrived early enough and queued up behind all the other cars. Our original slot was supposed to be mid January but due to a storm the event was postponed. We ended up in the first so had a great view of the screen.

You can avail of hot food such as burger, chips, pizza and hot dogs. Hubby got a hot dog for me and I shared it with the kids. You can also buy popcorn and donuts. However we brought our own popcorn to save money. Toilets are also available on site.

To watch the movie, you simply tune in the frequency on the radio which they will give you at the start when you present your ticket.

The movie started at 3pm and was over by 5pm. We had plenty of blankets with us to get all cosy. The only annoying thing I found, was the fact the car fogged up every so often. Nothing you can do really as it happened to everyone else. It was advised to leave the engine off but near the end, I turned it on because it was getting cold.

When the movie was over, it was all a bit of a rush to be honest. We didn’t get the full time to get organised in the car again.  We just about made it to strap the kids in again and head off. Maybe that could be improved.

Overall we had a lovely experience though and we might do it again in the Summer or Spring even, depending what movie they show.
