Working from Home vs Working in the Office

Working full-time can be hard some days. I need a very strict routine to make sure the kids are ready in the morning for creche/school and fed before heading out the door. Once I return from work, its off to collect them and we have about two hours before it’s bedtime again. We are managing well for now anyways.

I don’t work from home and I don’t think I ever could. I got a trial run when we had the bad snow the beginning of March this year. Everyone was at home. We do have a dedicated office and the doors can be shut. However, even with daddy at home, they would look for me every now and again. When you work on the phones, it’s pretty much impossible to get any work done. I need to be in an environment where I am not disturbed at all and that’s just possible in the office.

Recently Furniture At Work published a video which highlights the joys and comparison of working from home and working in the office. I can totally relate to it. As captured in the video, the woman starts to work in her pyjamas. I would never be able to do that. Even at weekends, when I am not working, I am not ready for the day to go downstairs unless I am fully dressed. My eldest might go down on his own in his PJs if he is up early enough but to have family breakfast we all need to be dressed. It’s a routine we have gotten into.

The other down side of working from home is, you have no people around you apart from your little ones. They are cute co-workers indeed but personally I need to have people around me, just to even socialise for a little bit. It would drive me mad not to be able to speak to someone in between calls or go on a lunch break with one of my colleagues. Getting out and about is just way more relaxing. When I get home from a busy day at work, I can dedicate my time to the kids full-time and don’t have to think about stuff I never got done if I was to work from home. Also, in my opinion it always depends on the work you do. There are full-time bloggers out there who have flexible hours and get most of their work done in the evening times when the kids are in bed. It is possible but it all depends on the type of job you have.

Do you work from home, if so how do you manage the workload?

I really do love working from home but I am fairly good at self motivation. You need a routine though you’re right!

Having a dedicated office space in our home is really important to me. It means it’s properly fit for purpose, and at the end of the day I can close the door behind me and spend time with my family without feeling too much like I’m still at work!

Wow that must be hard but I presume you both have different working hours or can be flexible?

At least my husband understands that it’s impossible to get work done when the kids are around lol

Yeah you do need a bit of socialising with an adult don’t you?

That’s handy to have her in childcare then. I get a day like that once a week as it’s my parental leave day but it’s mostly used to do the grocery shopping.

I work from home and there are days when i stay in my pjs and slob on the sofa with the laptop, other days i get fully dressed and work at the desk – then theres the days where the kids are driving me mad and i wish I had an office somewhere! lol

Both my husband and I work from home and it is hard trying to get the balance right but I do absolutely love it!

I work from home and the best thing for me is working in my PJs!
I only tend to do my work when my daughter is in childcare, I can’t get much done when she is around.
I love it but I do miss the adult conversation from the office.

I work from home and for the most part enjoy it but it can be a solitary affair it actually makes me look forward to the interaction on the school run on some days!!!

I work from home and I mostly love it. It’s a pain sometimes to be distracted by the washing up, but I do enjoy working from the sofa or in bed in my pjs haha. Great post!
