A Day Out at Powerscourt Waterfall

Lately we had such lovely weather. Spring is truly in the air. I really hope it stays now. We had enough of the cold and wet weather in fairness. It’s time for some long lasting sunshine and lots of days out with the family.

At the weekend we met up with the kids cousins. Hubby’s sister texted me on the Friday to see if we had any plans at the weekend. I am so glad she asked because we had literally ZERO plans. We all know how boring it can get with children, stuck in the house the whole day long, nowhere to go. We managed to all stay alive on the Saturday anyway.

On Sunday morning I made up a little picnic for all of us. We went to Tesco the day before and got some extra bits to take away. I prepared lovely ham and ham and cheese sandwiches, as well as some varieties of crisps, chocolate, fruit and drink. There was no shortage of food basically. We all met up at the cousins house and then drove down to Powerscourt Waterfall which is only a ten minute drive from Bray.

Powerscourt Waterfall is located in the beautiful County Wicklow. A county that I haven’t explored that much yet. I did not know this, but Powerscourt Gardens & Estate is located ten minutes away from the waterfall and has to be paid seperately. I always thought they were both located on the same ground. As it was just me and the two kids, we didn’t need a family ticket (€16 for 2 adults and 3 children), we paid €13.

As the sun was out, so were all the people. However we managed to find a parking space and headed down to the area where the waterfall was. We found a lovely spot, a bit sheltered, put down a few blankets and settled down for our little picnic. The kids were so happy to do a picnic. They love picnic for some reason. I think it is the only time they ever actually eat their sandwiches. Once fueled up, they were exploring the grounds, as long as we could see them, while the parents enjoyed a nice coffee.

They spotted tadpoles, bugs, creepy crawlers, jumped over a tiny river (got their feet/shoes wet too). What better day can you have and explore the nature. When we were finished with our picnic, we packed up and headed down to the waterfall. At 121 metres it is Ireland’s highest waterfall.

We didn’t go too close as I’d be afraid Matthew would fall in, so we had our photo taken from afar. On the way down to the river we discovered some cool trees with little holes in it that the kids loved sitting into.We the made our way back up to the cafe where the playground was located. The weather started to get a bit worse. Clouds started forming and we decided to leave. It was better to leave a bit earlier anyway before everyone left at the same time.

Matthew really wanted to go to the cousins house for a play then. It was early enough in the afternoon and so I said we would. In the end, they even got a bit of dinner. Overall it was such a lovely day and the time passed in no time. We are hoping to explore Glendalough next.
