Chloe, You Are Six

Dear Chloe,

what a mad year it has been. Shortly after you turned five last year, we entered something that we never thought would come. A year fast forward and we are still around COVID-19. Nevertheless we made the best out of it and I think you still had a great year with lots of memories.

Matthew’s birthday was not just Matthew’s birthday last year, it was also the day you started junior infants. We made the day as special as we could for you. Just like your brother you received a school cone when your finished the first day of school. I brought you to the school gate and you walked in with a big smile on your face with your other little friends you already knew from creche. Fast forward and we have tackled home schooling for a number of weeks now. Even though you are not a big fan of it, once we start, you are really good at it and we and your teacher are very proud of you.

A few months ago we ditched the pull ups at night. We have not looked back since. There was absolutely no problem at all when you went to bed with just your normal clothes on. I think it was more of the sensation of the pull up that you knew you could wee into it. We had one or two accidents at the start but to be expected.

As you turned six, we decided to give you a more big girl bedroom. We replaced your junior bed with a mid sleeper bed. You are delighted with it and we even got to a point now where you fall asleep by yourself with no one at the door. This was a big achievement for all of us. As well as that, you love you den under the bed and the new light I added as a personal touch. Reading your bedtime story in it is your favourite thing to do now.

After our cat Molly got lost and never came back, we decided to get another kitten. You adore cats as much as your mammy. The original plan was to pick up an eight week old kitten. Though her sister was so attached to her, we ended up taking both. You look after them so well and Milly loves you. We call her your scarf. She is always on your shoulder and she doesn’t mind at all. The best cat mammy they could have asked for.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to go abroad in the last year due to COVID 19. We were meant to be heading to Lanzarote last Easter but that was cancelled. Nevertheless we booked a holiday in Ireland at the top of County Donegal. I am pretty sure you had a lot of fun visiting the lighthouse, seeing the cousins and playing at the beach. It might be another one of those holidays this year, before we can go on our long awaited Summer holiday abroad again.

In this last year you have gotten more into watching the iPad but you do know your limit and put it down when you had enough. Your favourite TV show at the moment is “Go Dog Go”. You are mostly watching Netflix now. When you are not on the iPad, you like to either play with the cats, make up imaginary games with Matthew or on your own or you like to go and see Roxy the dog in the apartment block down the road. She is always so excited when she sees us coming up play with her ball and throw it. You are also big into dinosaurs now.

You started playing tennis during the Summer, the same as your brother. We didn’t get to have too many lessons yet due to the lockdown but hopefully we will be back to it soon as you are very good at it.

Your hair has gotten so long now that you always wear it up in a pony tail. You look adorable like that. Hopefully one day we can do something more with your hair such as pigtails or French plaits. You are now wearing clothing size 6 to 7. You are still quite on the small side of shoe size. It is between a 9 1/2 and 10. Wellie boots you are better off wearing a size 9 as the size 10 you have is falling off you.

In your last letter I mentioned that you don’t like vegetables very much. This has not changed the slightest. There was maybe one or two occasions where you tried a pea or carrot but nothing more than that. You do like fruit which is good. We might look into hiding the veg the way it is done in creche as you tell me.

We cannot forget you managing to now ride your bike without stabilisers. Well done Chloe. It only took a few attempts on the green outside the house. You are able to ride around tight corners and everything.

We love you very much.
