Matthew, Your are Six

Dear Matthew,

this evening we put you to bed as a six year old for the very first time. It has been six years already since you came into this world. We are so happy to have you. Your are a very caring child, mostly in regards to food. If mammy didn’t get to have a taste, you are willing to give me a spoon, even if it’s the last one. I think that is very touching and it’s nice to see what a warm heart you have.

Within the last year you finished your first school year in junior infants. You have learnt so much in school already and you know your whole ABC. In June you received your first school report which turned out to be one that made daddy and mammy very proud. Of course there are a few things here and there that we need to improve, such as the size and neatness of your writing, but that’s the reason why you go to school, right? You will pick it up eventually no doubt.

Despite this, reading and writing is one of your favourite things to do. I will find you in a different room of the house reading a book to yourself. At the moment you really like your construction work and so I found a few little post it notes around the playroom with the instructions of the builders work, written by you of course. You keep telling us day by day that when you grow, you want to be a builder man.

Unlike your little sister, sitting down for dinner has been a pleasure. You love and eat every dinner mammy makes you. You keep telling me at every dinner time “Thank you for making it, I love you”. It’s very cute that you appreciate my cooking.

Unfortunately in the last year you also managed to have two major accidents. One involving falling over a toy and bleeding at the back of your head and one falling onto your arm in creche where you ended up in a cast. Both times you handled really well. I know how scared you can be when it comes to doctors and hospitals. It shows me that you have grown a little bit more. Fingers crossed we will stay away from further accidents this coming year.

In the year that you were five we went on two main holidays. I think the one abroad was your favourite one as it involved departing an airplane and you got to stay in Legoland.

You have become a lot more tolerable when we are going to the hairdresser. You sit in the chair like a brave boy and get your hair cut. We haven’t mastered the razors yet but to even let scissors going near your ears is a huge improvement. Well done little man.

Shortly after your fifth birthday you have taken up football indoors. You seemed to have really enjoyed it. Hopefully we will be able to sign you up for the really soccer outdoors maybe next year as we don’t want to push you too much. Or maybe you would like to hit a few balls with daddy and play some tennis? Whatever sport you are choosing, we will definitely encourage you and help you in every way we can.

The love for video games has finally rubbed off your daddy (and maybe mammy). You love playing Mario Kart on the Switch. So much so that you asked us to have a Super Mario Themed birthday party this coming weekend. Your wish is my command. We hope you will have a great time with your friend and cousins.

And finally, in just two days you will step into the class room of senior infants. Another new chapter in life. We wish you all the best on your first day. I am sure you will just manage fine as you are such a sociable little guy.

All the best.

We love you very much.
