Our St. Patricks Weekend in Galway

Last weekend we went on a short little trip to Galway for St. Patrick’s Day. It was a Bank holiday Monday which gave us an extra day as a family. When you work full time, you are trying to squeeze as much time as you can. It would have been a waste of a weekend if were not going to head somewhere.

The plan was to leave early enough on Saturday morning but we had a bit of a hiccup. I am  not going into too much detail but basically Molly was supposed to be going into a cattery. However hubby let the cat outside and once she is out, she is out. In the end we just had to leave her behind but the neighbours were kindly watching her. They have a cat too, so we kind of help each other out every now and again.

Even though the weather was pretty bad for a drive, we managed to get there at lunch time. We all met up for some grub in Tom Sheridans. (Hubby’s favourite pub ever since) We grabbed a quiet little corner and as a treat, we had some desserts too. The kids were delighted and they thought it was the best day ever.

After that we drove down the house where we would be staying. We were so packed from all the food that we literally chilled out in the house all afternoon. We went out for a little bit as there was a green right in front of the house. Hubby went off to play tennis with his friend’s son, while we played a bit of football. As it was a bit of a mini holiday to the kids, we said they would be allowed to stay up a later. We had a late dinner. It was mash, beans and sausages. I have never seen Matthew eat so much. Generally the kids eat better if they are not in their own house.

Sunday, it was parade day. However in the West the weather is unpredictable. It literally changed every ten minutes. The wind was horrendous but it started to rain every now and again. The kids were determined to see the parade. But they were also happy enough to go to the aquarium. And so we decided to visit the Galway Atlantaquaria. Chloe informed she wanted to see the small fishies, NOT the big sharks. Luckily there was no big sharks.

As much as the fish are fascinating to the kids, we always seem to be flying through the place. We’d do well to spend half an hour in there.

Afterwards we had a look around in the gift shop. The kids could pick up something small. Chloe picked three little fish figurines and a square collectible with a fish in it. Matthew picked the same minus the figurines.

In the afternoon hubby went off playing tennis again for a bit, while we chilled out in the house and also went outside for a bit of fresh air. For dinner we ordered Dominos. The kids devoured it. It’s funny how kids can be so picky with food but they’ll have pepperoni pizza anytime.

On Monday, before heading home, we decided to have lunch together at the Salthill Promenade. Cafes were pretty packed post St. Patrick’s Day but we managed to find a cafe with a cosy little corner once again. I had an amazing club sandwich and the kids enjoyed a simple toasted sandwich. To finish it all off, we had ice cream and chocolate cake. We definitely ate a lot of calories that weekend, but it’s allowed once in a while.

Afterwards we went for a little walk along the promenade. Chloe loves the water. (even though she doesn’t want to go swimming yet)

Hubby then had the idea to pay a last visit to the amusement centre. Luckily this one, whenever you play a game, you receive tickets. Matthew and I won a good few. Hubby tried his luck at the flappy bird game The high score was 80. If you beat the high score, you will receive 500 tickets. Hubby managed to get 89. So we walked home with a few lovely prizes for the kids which included Spiderman car, bubbles, bouncy ball, a doll and many more things. I also tried my luck on the cranes. I managed to get a teddy for Chloe as well as Matthew. The kids were very happy and they are now a new addition to their bed.

Matthew slept past 7am (on a school morning!) which must mean he had a busy weekend. Exhausted dot com.
