A Day in a Parenting Blogger’s Life – The Growing Mum

It has been a while since I had a candidate for my blog series “A day in a parenting blogger’s life”. I love reading other mums/dad’s routines and was delighted to receive another entry recently. If you haven’t taken part in my series already, then don’t be shy and drop me a quick email and I will send you some information on it.

This week we have Vicky who is blogging The Growing Mum. Give her a big hello.

First of all, tell me a bit about yourself.

I am mummy to one lovely little boy with a second one currently growing. I am 29 with a 9 to 5 job for 4 days a week. On my day off, I try to spend quality time with my little boy and plan date night with the hubby. In my very limited spare time, I crochet, dabble in social media management & graphic design for my church and now, I have added blogging to the mix

How many times were you woken last night?

Last night, we woke 6 times but self-settled during one of them

Do you co-sleep?

Only for part of the night. He starts off in the cot and if it gets particularly difficult to settle him in the cot during one of his wakes then we usually bring him to bed for sanity. We set a limit of 2 hours to try and settle him in the cot but we sometimes cave sooner – especially if we need to be alert the next day.

What time do you normally wake up?

I normally get up around 6

How much average sleep do you get a night?

I think I get about 3- 4 hours sleep a night but not in one stretch. 13 months in and he’s yet to go longer than 4 hours (even 4 hours is rare). Last night we were so exhausted that we all went to bed at 7:20. I had 3 hours sleep in one go. It felt heavenly. He woke after 4 hours and then frequently after that.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

Go to the loo (well you asked). I put him on the potty to try to get him to poo or at least wee. He always wees but poos are about 90% of the time.

Tell me about your typical morning routine.

6 am- Wake then potty, brush teeth, wash

7 am – Breakfast, pack lunches for work and nursery

7:30 am – Leave home

8:00 am – Nursery drop off

When and how often do you prepare the family dinners? Give us a few examples what you would cook.

Most nights I do the dinner. I try to cook at the weekends so it’s just a case of defrosting/re-heating and maybe cooking the carb to go with it.

Batch meals are: spag bol, chilli, tomato-based sauce, pasta bake, pies, casseroles

Meals on the day (chopping done at the weekend): stir-fry, creamy sauces, tuna pasta, a made up meal to use the veggies we have.

On Fridays we do date night I try to cook something exciting for main or starter if I am short of time so it would be fancy things like lamb with butter beans sauce

What’s on the menu for lunch?

I have a convenient route here which I am quite please with. I follow the nursery menu as I provide lunch for my boy (refuse to pay £3 for a baby’s lunch). They tend to have quite hearty meals like spag bols, tuna pasta, casseroles. If we don’t fancy having the same as him, I make sandwiches, rolls with things like mackerel, burgers and sausages.

What activities have you got planned for the day for the kids?

On my day off, we go to a playgroup with a few mummy friends. We also go for a walk down the high street for my shopping fix, where all the shop assistants ‘ooo’ and ‘ahhh’ at him and try to get him to smile at them.

Do you generally eat dinner together as a family or get the kids fed first?

We usually eat dinner at the same time unless we want takeaway or something unhealthy. Sometimes he has leftovers and there may not be enough for us too so we do a quick dinner later

What do you do after dinner?

After dinner, I prepped for the next day if it’s a nursery day. Otherwise I tidy a bit, put the washing on etc

What is your bedtime routine?

Play, Bath, feed, story, cuddle

Most importantly, when and where do you normally blog in those 24 hours? Do you have a schedule?

I blog in the wee hours of the morning when I can’t get back to sleep after settling him.

Thanks Vicky for sharing a day in the life with us. Wow, I am super tired reading the amount of hours sleep you are getting. I couldn’t function in work at all.
